5:30PM - 7:30PM
Social Law Library
John Adams Courthouse - Boston, MA

The process and activities surrounding the release of an inmate from prison have traditionally been viewed as the responsibility of the corrections agency. As the inmate neared the end of sentence and discharge to the community, corrections agencies, including parole and probation, would move the inmate to lower security and prepare the plan for his or her community supervision and services.

Over the past few years, research and experience with best practices have shown that the return of inmates ot the community, known as offender reentry, is broadly affected by other actors in the criminal justice system, in particular the courts. The sentence an offender receives defines the parameters for corrections and parole officials to prepare and inmate for his or her eventual return o the community.

The role of the courts in offender reentry will be examined in a roundtable for judges designed to broaden the understanding of the sentencing process and offender reentry, the role judges play in the reentry process, as well as the information available to them in making sentencing decisions. The discussion will bring together judges, corrections, and parole officials to discuss current practices and issues that impact offender reentry. This exchange of ideas and information will improve the understanding of the key participants in the criminal justice system and help guide the state of Massachusetts toward a more effective offender reentry process.
